Mission

The mission of the American Humane Association, as a network of individuals and organizations, is to prevent cruelty, abuse, neglect, and exploitation of children and animals and to assure that their interests and well-being are fully, effectively, and humanely guaranteed by an aware and caring society.

American Humane envisions a nation where no child or animal will ever be a victim of willful abuse or neglect. As a recognized leader in professional education, training and advocacy, research and evaluation, American Humane joins with other similarly missioned individuals and organizations to make this vision a reality.

American Humane's President and CEO

American Humane's President and CEO Marie Belew Wheatley

The American Humane Association expresses our deepest sympathy to all the victims and evacuees of Hurricane Katrina. We cannot fathom the change in life as you have known it. However, we are encouraged by the determination and compassion we witness via the news and through the stories we hear from our own first responders every day. To those responders and to the very many more volunteers and individuals who are giving of themselves through their hard work and caring…thank you!

We are aware that we are in our earliest days of rising from this tragedy. There are many challenges ahead in supporting children, families, their companion animals and communities in reemerging as the vital hubs of activity and social connection they once were. American Humane Association will stand beside you.

You are in our warmest thoughts,

Marie Belew Wheatley and the Staff of American Humane
