Animal Defense League
Chartered in 1934, the Animal Defense League is a no-kill, non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for abandoned and abused dogs and cats by providing shelter, medical care, food, and safety. While maintaining a healthy and loving facility, the League consistently works to find the best possible home for each resident animal.
Supported by contributions and directed by a volunteer board, the League provides programs and services which strengthen the bond between animals and people. Through grass roots advocacy, education, legal intervention, and rescue, the organization is the leading voice for dogs and cats in crisis.
The Animal Defense League is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We do not not receive funds from government sources, but rely instead on the goodwill of local businesses and animal-loving folks like you! The shelter is also involved with the following:

The Animal Defense League is located in the northeast side of San Antonio, a few miles outside of Loop 410 near the intersection of Nacogdoches Road and Wurzbach Parkway.

What We Do
The Animal Defense League provides a variety of services and resources, including:
Adoption of homeless dogs and cats
Full-time staff veterinarian
Low cost spay/neuter program for pets of low-income families
Only area ambulance for picking up injured animals
Humane education programs in schools and the community
Pet-a-Pup pet therapy program for nursing homes
Low-cost boarding

If you come by and notice a dragging door or drooping ceiling tile, remember we also welcome contributions in the form of facility maintenance. Your skill and effort can make the Animal Defense League a more hospitable place for our animals awaiting adoption.
How to Join
Want to become a member? The Animal Defense League accepts tax-deductible monetary donations in any amount for any shelter purpose. As a contributor of at least $25, you become an annual member of the shelter and will receive our quarterly newsletter Waggin' Tales, which contains info about pet care and animal welfare, rescue and adoption stories, shelter news, and a schedule of upcoming events. You are also entitled to low cost boarding at the ADL.
