Hurricane Katrina :: Economic Impact
Hurricane Katrina has already had significant economic effects, which are expected to continue.
Here is a partial list of major damage to infrastructure and public works as a result of Hurricane Katrina, and, when known, their repair timeline and cost. Facilities that are destroyed or that will need to be replaced rather than repaired are listed in bold. For a national perspective on these events, see Economic effects of Hurricane Katrina.

Mobile, Alabama
Highways/Roads
Cochrane Bridge over Mobile Bay was hit by a flotel (floating habitat used by oil platform crews) that broke loose of its moorings. As of 31 August, it was determined that the damage was not critical, but only one lane (out of two) in each direction was opened. This is important due to the fact that the bridge is the I-10 Hazardous Materials route due to the underwater tunnels that cross under the Mobile River.
The causeway crossing the Mobile Delta (US Highway 90/98) was closed before the storm and was completely submerged during the hurricane. Parts of the causeway have been reopened while damage is being evaluated for the rest.
