New Orleans Oil :: Baton Rouge
ExxonMobil's Baton Rouge Refinery in Baton Rouge, Louisiana is the second-largest oil refinery in the United States, with an input capacity of 493,500 barrels per day (78,470 m³/d) or 20,727,000 US gallons per day as of January 1, 2005 [1]. Standard Oil first erected the refinery in 1909. Today's facility is part of a complex made of nine individual plants across the region. The main plant is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River. There are about 6,300 workers spread across these sites, including 4,000 direct employees (the rest are contractors). More often than not, the refinery is known within petro-chemical circles as being the foulest smelling facility in the United States. Because of this, Baton Rouge is often refered to amongst ExxonMobil employees nationwide as "S--- City." It is usually seen as a demotion if someone is transfered there; hence, one will sometimes hear a disgruntled oil company executive say, "I've been sent to ---- city."
