Canadian-based Suncor Energy Inc. is buying ConocoPhillips' Commerce City oil refinery, along with 43 Phillips gas stations and other assets, for $150 million.
Suncor, based in Calgary, is also buying current crude oil and product inventories. When the deal is completed, Suncor will take responsibility for the 585 employees, including 300 retail employees, as well as assume the existing contract with the local Paper, Allied-Industrial Chemical and Energy Workers International Union.
"Colorado is a growing, dynamic marketplace, and we're excited about expanding our business to this area. This acquisition provides us with the flexibility to move our products to the Denver refinery or other customers -- and gives us increased control of our product from production straight through to the consumer," said Rick George, Suncor CEO and president, in a statement.
Last year, the merger between Conoco Inc. and Philips Petroleum Co. was approved by the Colorado Attorney General's office because the companies agreed to sell all of Conoco's Denver refinery assets. Attorney General Ken Salazar and attorneys general in seven other states were concerned that the combined companies would reduce competition and lead to higher gasoline prices. Without the sales, the merged company would have controlled about 30 percent of the bulk supply capacity east of the Continental Divide.
