Special Message

Dear Friends of New Orleans,

New Orleans' culture is defined by perseverance. In the city's 300-year history, our way of life has survived not just storms, but wars, fires, epidemics, and more. Even as we mourn the loss of life and property caused by Hurricane Katrina, our fundamental spirit remains strong. We will rebuild our city, restoring it to a better New Orleans than ever before.

Many New Orleanians are heading home to have a hand in the rebuilding. Businesses are starting back up. Services are being repaired. Amazingly, the French Quarter and many of our greatest architectural assets came through the hurricane in excellent shape, and eventually tourism will do much to help revive our economy.

The outpouring of hospitality, sympathy, and support all across America has lifted our spirits and given us hope when we needed it most. You'd better believe we'll return the favor when we can, and show you good times like you've never known. As a sign of our determination, Carnival organizations are already planning for Mardi Gras 2006. The celebration will go on next year, marking 150 years of contemporary Carnival – and what a celebration it will be!

So start looking forward to 300 more years of our unique music, art, food, and festivals. New Orleans will be rebuilt. In fact, it has already begun.

Sincerely,
Sandra S. Shilstone
