  • A Food City tractor-trailer is parked at Bristol Motor Speedway to collect items that will be delivered to the hurricane victims.

  • The Kids for Kids Campaign is encouraging kids to bring shoe boxes filled with toys…puzzles, stuffed animals, crayons, coloring books, etc., to be given to the kid victim of Hurricane Katrina. Drop off locations include Catholic Charities in Jonesborough and Red Cross offices in Johnson City and Kingsport. Kids may pick up empty shoe boxes at Payless Shoes, Footlocker, and Famous Footwear in the Mall at Johnson City.

  • Todd Love of Erwin Motors and Love Chapel Christian Church are asking local citizens to help them fill a trailer full of supplies to take to survivors of Hurricane Katrina who are staying at a youth camp sponsored by Heartland Christian Church in Alexandria, Louisiana.The trailer is located at the Food Lion parking lot in Erwin, and there will be someone at the trailer to accept donations Thursday and Friday morning from 7:45 until 9. They will also be taking items from 11:45 until 1 p.m. and then in the evening from 4:30 until 6:30. Those drop-off times are for both Thursday and Friday. To donate items on Saturday, call Bruce Shawver at 743-5909. When the trailer is full it will be transported to the camp in Alexandria, Louisiana. The youth camp is located 223 miles from New Orleans and 144 miles from Baton Rouge. Their buildings are air-conditioned and they have a kitchen where they can prepare meals for the refugees, however, they need help in paying their utility bill which will be more than $3000 a month. Items needed include food, powdered drink mix, bedding, towels, toiletries, diapers and baby food. There is also a great need for clothing for men, women and children. They prefer new clothing, but used clothing that is in good condition and clean will also be accepted.

  • Last night during a special called meeting, the Unicoi County Commission voted to donate $6000 to the Kingsport Chapter of the American Red Cross in light of the recent situation in the Gulf Coast.

  • Don's Motor's in Weber City will hold a going-out-of-business auction Saturday at 10 a.m., where all the proceeds from the sale of shop and office equipment will go to hurricane relief. 423-392-0736 or 246-9300

  • KCS- Kids Caring and Serving. Kingsport City Schools raise funds for Red Cross. Donations through September 9.

  • A combined effort of the Washington County Johnson City EMS, Fire, Police and the Washington County Sheriff's Office will be accepting donations for Hurricane Katrina victims in Louisiana. Travis Brown Trucking Co. of Jonesborough will be hauling the items from Johnson City to the disaster site in Louisiana at no charge. 423-773-3218.

  • Bank of Tennessee partner with WQUT, WKOS, WJCW, WGOC, WKIN through September 30 to collect money for the Red Cross.

  • Issuing a challenge to other local churches is New Liberty Freewill Baptist Church, which donated $10,000 to the Red Cross on Tuesday.

  • Kroger stores in Virginia, North Carolina, Northeast Tennessee, Eastern Kentucky and Southeast Ohio are accepting cash contributions. Customers can donate by rounding their shopping bill up to the next whole dollar. Kroger is also accepting cash donations. Money collected will be forwarded to the American Red Cross.
